미국화가, 메인 주 로렐 (Lovell, Maine) 출생
19세기 미국의 풍속화를 대표하는 화가이다. 1849년 유럽으로 건너가
뒤셀도르프, 헤이그 등에서 락문을 깊이 연구하고 1855년 귀국 한 뒤 건강하고 평온한 서민 생활을 주제로한
작품을 많이 그렸다. 구중에서도 '올드 켄터키 홈'은 노예제도의 밝은 면을 취급하여 일반일들의 관심을 모았다.
1870년대에 들어와 집중적으로 그린 야외 풍경화 시리즈 중에는 프랑스 인상파와 비슷한 빛과 색의 실험 흔작을 엿볼 수 있으나
W. 호머의 그늘에 가려 두각을 나타내지 못하였다. (웹 글 옮김)
