18세기 프랑스의 정물 ․ 풍속화가.
샤르댕은 프랑스 파리에서 가구를 만드는 장인이었던 아버지 밑에서 태어났습니다.
이러한 출생 배경은 샤르댕의 작품세계에 많은 영향을 미칠 수밖에 없었습니다.
역사화나 초상화 또는 신화를 주제로 그렸던 이 당시의 미술세계와 다르게
샤르댕이 정물화나 풍속화를 그릴 수 있었던 것은 바로 아버지와 가정환경의 영향이 컸다고 할 수 있습니다.
그의 아버지는 샤르댕이 화가가 되는 것을 원치 않았으나 샤르댕은 P. J. 카즈와 N. 코아페르에게서
미술을 배우면서 재능을 인정받았습니다.
샤르댕은 로코코 양식의 화가였지만 귀족들의 호사스러운 생활에 휩쓸려 다니지 않았으며,
소재 또한 당시의 화가들과 다른 지극히 일상적인 서민의 삶과 풍경을 담았습니다.
1728년 거리에서 열린 청년화가 전람회에 《가오리》, 《식기 선반》을 출품하여 호평을 받았으며,
이 작품들로 아카데미 회원으로 추천받았습니다.
샤르댕 작품소재의 평범함은 중년의 경험에서도 그 이유를 찾을 수 있는데
36살이 되던 해 샤르댕은 부인을 잃고 그 후 재혼하기까지 10년 동안 두 아이들을 혼자 양육해야만 했습니다.
따라서 그는 일상의 생활에 더욱 깊은 성찰을 느낄 수 있었습니다.
샤르댕 그림의 소재는 냄비 등을 비롯한 부엌용품, 채소, 과일, 바구니, 생선, 담배기구, 달걀 등
단순한 생활용품들을 사용하였습니다. 이러한 작품소재로 《식전의 기도》, 《팽이를 들고 있는 아이》,
《카드의 성》, 《시장에서의 귀로》, 《요리하는 여인》 등의 작품을 남겼습니다.
샤르댕은 드로잉 없이 바로 캔버스 위에 그림을 그렸으며, 정물과 색채의 조화, 안정되고 견고한 색채,
그림의 꼼꼼함 등은 높이 평가받고 있습니다. 말년에는 정물화나 풍경화 외에도 파스텔로 그린 초상화로
자신의 재능을 유감없이 발휘하였는데 《자화상》(1771), 《아내의 초상》(1775)의 예술적 탁월함은
당시 파스텔 초상화로 이름을 날렸던 라투르를 능가한다는 평가를 받고 있습니다.
