섬머셋 모음이 쓴 달과 6팬스

1919년에 발표되었다. 프랑스 후기인상파 화가 P.고갱의 생애에서 힌트를 얻어 쓴 소설로, 장편작가로서 명성을 굳힌 작품이다.

주인공 스트릭랜드는 런던의 평범한 주식중개인으로 처자가 있는 40대 남자이다. 이 남자가 돌연 무엇엔가 홀린 듯 처자를 버리고 파리에 나가 화가가 된다. 그는 그에게 호의를 보이는 선량한 친구의 부인과 정을 통하여 그 일가를 파멸하게 한다. 마지막에는 타히티섬으로 이주하여 나병에 걸려 고통의 나날을 보내며 강렬한 그림을 그리다가 이 섬에서 죽는다.

이 소설의 제목에서 ‘달’은 때로 광기(狂氣)와 예술의 극치를 뜻하고, ‘6펜스’는 재산과 세속적인 명성을 갈망하는 감정의 상징이라고 볼 수 있다.

마오리족의 말로
<아름다운 마리아>라는 수태고지를 알리는
천사의 부름소리라고 한다.
실제로 화면에는 안쪽에 있는
꽃나무 그늘에
천사의 모습이 보인다.
고갱은 종교적인 테마로서 그림을 그린 것이 아니라
타히티인들의 생활모습을 표현하려한
것이다

이 작품은 고갱이 타히티에 도학한 후 성취한 모든 이론과
실제를 보여주는 현란한 이력서라고 말할 수 있다.
이
그림의 소재는 고객의 체험에 의한 것이다.
어느 날 여행에서 돌아와 새벽에 방문을 열었을 때
본 광경을 그림으로 구상화한
것이다.
" 테후라는 침대에 배를 깔고 나체로 누워 움직이지 않고 있었다.
공포에 질려 눈을 부릅뜨고 있었지만 내가 누구인지 모르는
것 같았다.
한동안 나도 불안했었다.
테후라의 공포가 나한테도 전해진 것이다.
그녀의 눈은 유황빛을 내쏟듯 빛나고 있었다.

이렇게 아름다운 그녀를 나는 처음 보았다.
어둠속에서 위험한 유령과 불타는 욕망에 접해있던 이 소녀가
혹시나 두려워할까봐
나는 움직이는 것조차 조심스러웠다.
그 순간 그녀가 나를 어떻게 생각 했는지를 알고 싶었다.
아마도 곤혹스러운 얼굴로 보아 나를
귀신이나
그녀의 동족들을 잠못이루게 괴롭히는 투파커응?해골쯤으로
알았을지도 모를
일이다."
