인상파의 창시자이자 지도자이며 한결같이 확고한 옹호자였다. 원숙기의 작품에서는 빛에 따라,
또는 자신의 흥미가 바뀜에 따라 캔버스를 바꾸어가면서 같은 주제를 연작으로 제작하는 방법을 개발했다.
'연작'에는 대개 날짜가 적혀 있고, 함께 전시되는 경우가 많았다. 〈노적가리 Haystacks〉(1891)·
〈루앙 대성당 Rouen Cathedral〉(1894)은 그 좋은 예이다. 모네는 지베르니에 있는 집에 수련이 가득한 연못을 만들었는데,
이 연못은 그의 〈수련 Nymphéas〉 연작에 영감을 주었다.
모네가그린 수많은 작품들 가운데 특히 놀라운 성과는 1865~70년에 완성한 작품들이다. 이때는 그가 훗날 인상파 기법의
특징이 된 단편적인 붓놀림에 의한 특유의 불연속 터치로 그리기 이전이었다. 1880년대에는 여러 곳을 여행했지만,
1890년대에는 지베르니, 혹은 그 부근에서 지내면서 연작을 제작하는 일에 전념했다. 1890년 모네는 지베르니의 집과
정원 건너편에 있는 늪지대를 사들였는데, 이 늪지대를 가로질러 엡트 강의 지류가 흐르고 있었다.
그는 이 시내의 물줄기를 돌려, 수련 연못을 만들기 시작했다, 이 이국적인 도원경에서 그는 그후 20년이 넘도록 명상에 잠기고
그림을 그리게 되었다. 오랜 시일에 걸친 모네의 끈질긴 자연 탐구가 이룩한 이 최고의 성과는 그가 죽을 때까지 공개되지 않았다.
1916~25년 연못 정원에서 그린 독특하고 전례가 없는 다른 작품들만이 아니라 오랑주리 벽화를 위해 그린 수많은 스케치도
1950년대까지는 거의 알려지지 않았지만, 오늘날에는 전세계의 주요한 개인 소장품과 미술관에 널리 퍼져 있다.
