Robert Vonnoh
Hartford, Connecticut, 1858-Nizza 1933
Initally an apprentice printer, he studied painting at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and, from 1881, at the Académie Julian in Paris, returning to Boston in 1883 where his work was very popular. Back in France, he painted landscapes with the artist's colony at Grez-sur-Loing. He married sculptress Bessie Potter in 1899 and they moved to New York, joining the artists' colonies in Cos Cob and Old Lyme, Connecticut, in summer. They started going back to Grez-sur-Loing in 1907.
