나무들은 아름답게 가을 단장을 하고
숲 사이의 오솔길은 메마른데
10월의 황혼 아래 물은
고요한 하늘을 비춘다.
바위 사이로 치런히 넘치는
물 위에 떠노는 쉰 아홉 마리의 백조
내가 처음 세어 보았을 때로부터
열 아홉 번째 가을이 찾아왔구나.
그 때는 내가 미처 다 세기도 전에
모두들 갑자기 치솟아 올라
커다란 원을 그리면서
날개 소리도 요란히 흩어졌던 것을.
저 눈부신 새들을 바라보노라면,
내 가슴은 쓰라려진다.
모든 것은 변해 버렸으니
맨 처음 이 기슭에서 황혼에
머리 위에 요란한 날개 소리를 들으며,
보다 가벼운 걸음으로 걸었던 그 날 뒤로,
아직도 지칠 줄 모르고 자기 짝끼리
그것들은 차가운 정든 물결을
헤엄치거나 공중을 날아가
그들의 마음은 늙지 않았다.
어디를 헤매든지 그들에게는
정열과 패기가 항상 따른다,
하지만 그들은 지금 고요히 물 위를 떠간다.
신비롭게, 또 아름답게
어느 동심초 사이에 둥우리를 짓고
어느 호수가 또는 물웅덩에서
사람들의 눈을 즐겁게 할것인가.
내 언제 잠깨어 그들이 날아가 버렸음을 깨달을 때.
The Wild Swans at Coole
The trees are in their autumn beauty,
The woodland paths are dry,
Under the October twilight the water
Mirrors a still sky;
Upon the brimming water among the stones
Are nine-and-fifty swans.
The nineteenth autumn has come upon me
Since I first made my count;
I saw, before I had well finished,
All suddenly mount
And scatter wheeling in great broken rings
Upon their clamorous wings.
I have looked upon those brilliant creatures,
And now my heart is sore.
All's changed since I, hearing at twilight,
The first time on this shore,
The bell-beat of their wings above my head,
Trod with a lighter tread.
Unwearied still, lover by lover,
They paddle in the cold,
Companionable streams or climb the air;
Their hearts have not grown old;
Passion or conquest, wander where they will,
Attend upon them still.
But now they drift on the still water
Mysterious, beautiful;
Among what rushes will they build,
By what lake's edge or pool
Delight men‘s eyes, when I awake some day
To find they have flown away?

conquest: 정복. (사랑하는 사람의) 획득. 예이츠는 사랑하는 모드 곤을 얻지 못한데 비해 백조들은 사랑에 실패하지 않는다고 생각한 듯하다.
