The Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the "Emperor Concerto", was his last piano concerto. It was written between 1809 and 1811 in Vienna, and was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven's patron and pupil. The first performance took place in December 1810, at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the soloist being Friedrich Schneider. In 1812, Carl Czerny, his student, gave the Vienna debut of this work.

The epithet of "Emperor" for this concerto, used in English-speaking countries, was not Beethoven's own, but was coined by Johann Baptist Cramer, the English publisher of the concerto. Its duration is approximately forty minutes.
The concerto is scored for solo piano, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in B-flat (Clarinet I playing Clarinet in A in movement 2), two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani in E-flat and B-flat, and strings.

II. Adagio un poco mosso
The second movement in B major is, in standard contrast to the first, calm and reflective. It moves into the third movement without interruption when a lone bassoon note B drops a semitone to B-flat, the dominant note to the tonic key E-flat. According to Alex Ross, this movement supplied the melody for Bernstein's "Somewhere" from West Side Story.

 

 

나폴레옹(1769~1821) 은

                 당시 프랑스 식민지였던 '코르시카' 에서 태어났다.

                 그는 식민지 국민이었지만 

                 당당히 프랑스 파리 사관학교 포병대에 입교한 뒤

                 포병 소위로 임관하였다.

                

                 그는 1799년에 쿠데타를 일으켰고

                 1804년에 대관식을 통해 프랑스 황제가 되었다.

 

                 베토벤(1770~1827) 은

                 독일의 본에서 태어났으며,

                 성인이 된 이후 거의 오스트리아 빈에서 살았다.

                 

                 태어난 연대를 보면 아시겠지만

                 나폴레옹과는 1살 차이 동생이다.

 

                 그는 평소 나폴레옹을 존경했다.

                 적국의 군인이자 정치가 임에도 불구하고 ..

 

                 해서,

                 그가 나폴레옹을 위해 만든 곡이

                 베토벤 피아노 협주곡 5번, 일명 '황제' 이다.

 

                 이 곡은 밝고 경쾌함이 특징인데

                 들어 보면 실로 웅대하고 장엄하다.

 

                 그는 이 곡을 나폴레옹에게 바치려고

                 수 차례 시도하고 노력했으나

                 황제인 나폴레옹 근처에도 가 보지 못하고는

                 끝내 곡을 바치는 데 실패했다.<옮긴글>
